"???"

Afilaor, Sentinel of the Emery is a boss from Blasphemous 2 located in the Beneath Her Sacred Grounds area. Defeating him will transport the Penitent One to the Chapel of the Five Doves where he will meet The Witness. After the fight, the Penitent One will also receive the Passage of Ash ability, which allows him to perform a double jump.

Yerma will also be located right outside the boss arena, in case her aid is required for this fight.

Behaviour and Tactics[]

Jump - Afilaor will jump forward or backward while slashing with his sword and smash the ground upon landing, knocking up nearby terrain. The knocked up terrain can be evaded by jumping over it. This attack does not change with the phases. He normally does this multiple times before stopping.

Slash - Afilaor grinds his weapon against his grinding wheel while blowing into his whistles and then slashes. This attack can be blocked. The attack becomes more deadly with each phase and dashing to avoid the projectile may be preferred.

Throwing Knives - Afilaor spins on the spot on either end of the arena and throws knives. Where they land is indicated by flashing points across the arena. Easily avoided by staying away from said flashing points.

Spinning Slashes - Afilaor spins towards the Penitent One. This attack can be blocked, although it may be harder to do consecutively due to how fast the interval between each time he tries to come to the Penitent One is. In phases two and three, he will spin towards you multiple times. In this case, be ready to parry again the moment he redirects towards the Penitent One. The number of times Afilaor will spin towards him will increase with the change to phase two.

Jumping Knife Throw - Afilaor leaps into the air and throws knives outward on an angle that gets closer and closer to directly downward. At the end, he falls and knocks up terrain around him. When he does this, run towards him so are under him. There could be time to do an upward hit from below before he falls. When he does, dash away and then jump over the knocked up terrain.

Leaping Wave Slash - A unique phase three move, Afilaor will leap off screen and then land on top of the Penitent One while slashing, which also causes a flaming projectile normally seen during the normal slash to appear. This projectile is best blocked.

A New Weapon - After breaking his large knife while slashing at the Penitent One, Afilaor will jump into the background of the arena. There, he will dig into the pile of weapons, causing a rain of various weapons falls from the sky. Run around to avoid them and dash when necessary. At the end after finding a new weapon, he will land on top of the Penitent One.

Trivia[]

  • The Afilaor boss is inspired by a profession only found in Spain and Latin America. The afiladores ("sharpeners") are traveling merchants who specialize in sharpening tools such as razors, knifes, scissors and overall cutting instruments. The original tool of the afiladores was a rack with the grinding wheel, which they carried on their backs. Later it became a grinding cart that was pushed, then an adapted bicycle. They walk the streets to offer their services and announce their passage by playing a brief and iconic melody unique to them. This sound is produced by small flute made of reeds and plastic called "chiflo" or "sharpener's whistle"; part of said melody is showcased in the boss fight every time Afilaor sharpens his blade or performs a jump. In recent times, the trade of afiladores has lost most of its importance as a result of mass production and a wider supply of inexpensive consumer goods, as well as the availability of affordable sharpening tools and grinding machines. In addition, the industry fell into certain disrepute due to fraudulent or unskilled grinders providing inferior and overpriced services, due to incorrect grinding techniques and/or insufficient cooling. This has led to a sharp decline in demand for their services, making them an increasingly rare sight .
    • Afilaor results from the regional application (e.g. in the Andalusian dialect) of the Spanish language's historical ellision of consonants -d- [ð] (e.g. Lat. hod > Sp. hoy "today") to cases formerly inadmissible in Old Spanish (e.g. when the results would have been diphthongs aa, ao. oa, & oo).
  • This boss has two death animations; whether he is killed on the ground or in mid-air determines which death-animation to play.
  • Weapons that rain down during the phase transitions include swords used by Shieldmaidens, spears used by Spear of the Cathedras, and more spears used by Seraphs.
