Comic The Kneeling Cover

Blasphemous: The Kneeling is a comic book written and illustrated by members of The Game Kitchen.

The comic was provided as a Kickstarter bonus and as part of the deluxe edition of the game. It acts as a prequel to the main story within the game and explains how the Penitent One obtained Mea Culpa, and how he ended up in the place we see him at the start of the game. It features the Penitent One, Crisanta of the Wrapped Agony, and Desamparados.

Story[]

The comic begins with Desamparados telling the Penitent One that the "Sword of the Father", referencing the Mea Culpa, is born again and must be reclaimed. They travel to a chapel in the forest and along the way Desamparados describes the affect that the Miracle has had on the land, referencing her own curse and the events of The Turned Throne and the Burnt Tree. She also provides backstory regarding the Mea Culpa. This first part ends with the Penitent One taking the Mea Culpa from the Kneeling Stone and Desamparados stating, "I shall call you Penitent One."

The second part of the comic is mostly a battle between Crisanta of the Wrapped Agony and the Penitent One. She states that their penances are, "different, opposite, yet complimentary," suggesting that she is in direct opposition to his goal. She defeats the Penitent One and drags his body to the Brotherhood of the Silent Sorrow, of which he was the last surviving member. She implies that the Brotherhood has done some sort of wrong against the Church in the past, which is also hinted at in game. The comic ends with Crisanta saying, "If the Miracle has really pointed out to you, you will rise again upon the dead... If that is your fate then we will meet again..."
