"I, Crisanta in penance, excommunicate you, expel you, execrate you, with the blessing of Our Miracle of the Greatest Pain."

Crisanta of the Wrapped Agony is a knight devoted to His Holiness Escribar and one of the last bosses in the game.

She is seen in front of the gates that lead to Escribar, where she confronts the Penitent One in an effort to stop his journey. When she is defeated, she escapes, and in Ending A she undoes the Penitent One's sacrifice to cause the cycle of suffering to begin anew.

If the Penitent One wields the Apodictic Heart of Mea Culpa and crosses swords with her, she will fight with increased vigor, directed by the High Wills to see to his defeat. She, however, is thwarted, and the Penitent One uses the sword to free her from the influence of the High Wills. She returns to the Mea Culpa Chapel, where she gives the Penitent One the Holy Wound of Abnegation, and later on accompanies him to take down Escribar, Sentinel of the Eternal Procession and undo the High Wills in Ending C.

The official art book states that her sword is affected by the Miracle, so it is covered in red bandages that are anointed in consecrated oils just like the armor of the Anointed Legion. Further updates confirmed that Crisanta is the captain of the Legion.

In the comic, she mentions that the goals of her and the Penitent One are "different, opposite, yet complementary," suggesting that she is in direct opposition to the Penitent One's goal. This may give insight into her post-credits scene of ending A when she removes the Mea Culpa from the body of the Penitent One.

Behaviour and Tactics[]

  • Slash: uses the sword to deal damage in front of her, can be parried and dodged. Has two different animations for the attack, with the second one coming out more delayed than the first and needing to be timed differently for a Parry. These slashes have deceptive range, as Crisanta will lunge forward a good distance as she attacks if the Penitent one isn't initially within reach.
    • follow up: this attack can be followed by a second Slash or a Parry if not parried by the Penitent One. The lunge on the second Slash is much longer than the first one, effectively giving her reach across the entire screen, and can only be blocked.
  • Plummet: leaps slightly back and upwards to the top of the screen, before plummeting blade-first at the ground at a 45° angle. Landing creates a wave of explosions that sweep outward in both directions along the ground. The plunge can be easily dodged, but neither aspect can be blocked or dodged through requiring a jump over the wave. If Crisanta strikes the side of the screen instead of the ground, she will swap direction in place and Plummet again.
  • Jump: Jumps backwards gaining space with the Penitent One.
    • follow up: the jump will always be followed up immediately by either a Plummet or Slash in Phase 1, Phase 2 adds Charge as an additional option she can use.
  • Parry: A defensive technique. If Crisanta gets attacked during the parry, the attack will be blocked and followed by a slash. This slash can be blocked.

Phase 2

  • Charge: Disappears and reappears in a corner charging forward at high speed, can be jumped or blocked. Will always be either two Charges followed by an Air Charge, or if she's at lower health a Charge, then Air Charge, then two Charges, and then one more Air Charge (unless an air charge is blocked, see below).
  • Air Charge: Reappears in the air above you and to the side, before charging toward the spot you were when she appeared at a 45° angle. Can be dodged easily or blocked, if blocked she will instantly disengage the attack pattern into a Jump.

Phase 3 (only on True Ending route)

  • Changes: All attacks in this phase will be faster and deal more damage. Slash can no longer be parried, only blocked. Charge will only be a single charge instead of three or five, with Air Charge no longer being used. If a Plummet Attack strikes the side of the screen instead of the ground, the second one will be aimed directly at the Penitent One instead of the normal 45° angle.
  • Sword Waves: Retreats to the corner of the screen before swinging her sword to launch four crescent-shaped projectiles for high damage. Can be blocked or jumped over, there is a slightly longer delay between the second and third projectiles.

Crisanta forces the Penitent One to master both the parry and the dodge. The Slash attack is her signature move and the one used the most. Both parrying and dodging are viable strategies, but the parry - although more difficult to execute due to the different possible timings - cuts the animation, damages her, and prevents the follow up.

The Plummet is usually easy to dodge, and is an excellent time to get in some damage during the jump that immediately follows it.

The Parry is easy to spot and avoid, both because the animation lasts for a long time and cannot trigger the counter attack until she is fully in parry stance.

Crisanta will enter her second stage after losing around 45% of her health. When it triggers she will Jump, following it with a unique lightning explosion on herself that removes the red bandages from her sword, which will glow purple from here on. She is unable to be damaged while doing this attack, and it will hurt the Penitent One if he is close enough at the time.

The Charge attack is by far her most dangerous technique at first. It is extremely fast, deals a great amount of damage and cannot be dodged through, so time your blocks or jumps wisely. It is, however, extremely predictable with a fairly long start-up time so with practice it will likely be her least dangerous attack overall.

Consecrated Amethyst is highly recommended as her attacks deal magic damage, despite their lightning-based aesthetic.

As of the Wounds of Eventide update, if the player defeats her while equipping the Apodictic Heart of Mea Culpa, she will initiate a new, third phase after her first health bar has been emptied. This third phase behaves just like the previous, but she is a lot faster and leaves smaller windows to inflict damage. She also gains a new attack that unleashes sword waves, but leaves her fatigued and vulnerable to two four-hit sword combos.

Lore[]

At times when I pray within these sacred walls of peace, I sense the presence of the Lady of the Bandaged Sword. At times, I hear her breathing behind her golden helmet that blinkers her eyes, as she waits in silence, cloaked in darkness. At times, I hear her murmuring what sounds like never-ending prayers. And yet, I have never seen her enter nor leave this place. What or who can she be waiting for? (Crown of Gnawed Iron)

Dialogue[]

Boss Intro Penitent One in sleeplessness.

Carrying the guilty sword, you have committed the most serious crimes against the Mother and her Saints, against the Miracle and its outbreaks.
We have been entrusted with putting an end to your mission.
I, Crisanta in penance, excommunicate you, expel you, execrate you, with the blessing of Our Miracle of the Greatest Pain.
And thus shall your name be erased under the heavens.

Defeated Go on… Purge my soul, bitten by The Miracle.
Between phases, with the Apodictic Heart of Mea Culpa That sword you wield...

The High Wills sing that I must escape the kiss of its steel, as it is wholly tainted by the heresy of its bearer.
The Great Ones, from the Eternal Processions, demand that I should battle until I draw my dying breath.
The Three...
The High Voices proclaim that your execution cannot be delayed.
And so I fear... that my penance is far from over.

Defeated with the Apodictic Heart of Mea Culpa Go on... Purge my soul, bitten by the Miracle.

(The Penitent One breaks the chains on her soul)
This pain... that I feel...
It is... deeper... more ancient...
The Guilt you carry... has broken something inside of me...
My faith... my soul... is wounded...
I will now walk to the Chapel where it all began, where the first Kneeling took place.
Your first step... towards atonement.
Now leave me alone with my deep wound.

In Mea Culpa Chapel, if defeated without the Apodictic Heart of Mea Culpa equipped The severed crimson bindings now reveal my agony.

They are uneasy to see you, the architect of sacrilege, here at the end of this bitter, sombre, and desolate path…
His Holiness, our father, awaits you under the marble of his white deambulatory.
He will achieve that which my bandaged sword could not. He will leave you on your knees in the ashes of the holy tree that once burned.
He will lay his merciful hand on your forehead sanctifying the end of your blasphemy.
Leave me alone with these lies, with the chimera, with the delirium of my own pain.

In Mea Culpa Chapel, if defeated with the Apodictic Heart of Mea Culpa equipped Once again... My mask of blindness meets your silent one.

Do not worry on my account... The crimson cords protect me from being wounded...
It is true, and so...
Your sword and you - Guilt and Penance in holy communion - only you both can put an end to this eternal cycle. To this eternal twilight with neither beginning nor end.
Penitent One, there is something greater than the Mother Church, greater than the Miracle, greater than what I have protected with my life and my faith...
Is is that which controls the Miracle...
I am speaking of the Supreme Trinity... The High Wills.
They can be found on the other side of the Dream, on the path of the Etneral Processions.
But only a soul in Supreme Suffering can obtain Supreme Absolution, and thus be able to reach such a place.
(Gives Holy Wound of Abnegation)
Now you are marked by the Four Wounds. The final ascension awaits beyond the Throne. Beyond the Dream.
Perform your final penance and make your way to the Turned Throne.
The Eternal Processions await us on the other side.

Trivia[]

  • Her sword is covered with the same cloth as the one used by Perpetva and Esdras.
  • Concept art shows that Crisanta was originally meant to have her left arm missing. It's unclear if this was meant to happen at some point of the story or an unrelated, past event.
  • Crisanta appears in the prequel comic Blasphemous: The Kneeling. It is revealed that she participated in the destruction of the Brotherhood of the Silent Sorrow and defeated The Penitent One when he took the Mea Culpa, leaving his body alongside his brothers in the brotherhood's chapel.
    • It is revealed as well that she is also a penitent, her vow however forfeited her sight, just like the Penitent One forfeited his voice.
  • The song, "Su Beso de Plata" is the 23trd track on the official Blasphemous soundtrack and is what plays during Crisanta's boss fight.
