"Higher will, incorporeal and inscrutable fathers, I am the heir of your all encompassing light.
Devotion itself embodied in weathered flesh and gilded filigree.
Your Magnum Opus.
Though I am crowned with your glory, why do you censure my presence alongside you?
What is this obscure darkness of unanswered cries that prevents me from understanding the purpose of my birth?
Are the same crimson clouds that heralded my welcome, the grave omen of your judgement?
If this confrontation is proof of thy dignity of your glory, then so be it."
Incarnate Devotion is the last boss from Blasphemous 2 and the last child of the Miracle. It can be found at the top of the Crimson Rains right after defeating Eviterno.
The Penitent One can access this battle by ascending to the arena through a portal, but it can be chosen to ascend or not at that moment (it won't have any repercussion). However, ascending will determine the Ending of the game.
If the Incense of the Envoys is acquiered before ascending, burning up the 4 Altarpieces (Cierzo, Gregal, Lebeche and Jaloque) in the correct order in the Chapel of the Doves, Ending A (good ending) will be achieved. If the Incense is not acquiered before ascending and fighting the boss (or if acquired but not given before ascension), Ending B (bad ending) will be achieved.
The incense can be obtained even after fighting the Final Boss, as the game will leave the Penitent One in the Prie Dieu outside the arena if the game is reloaded (like in the first game).
The Mea Culpa DLC, provides a new Ending C (true ending). To achieve it players have to restore the Mea Culpa and obtain the Prayer of the Penitent One Prayer, which requires finishing the entirety of the DLC's quest. The player has to equip both before ascending and utilizing the Incense. Mea Culpa must be used to defeat Incarnate Devotion.
Behaviour and Tactics[]
Attack names not official
- Golden Explosion: Incarnate Devotion will summon four orbs across the screen, which will create large explosions in sequence, soon after. Must be double jumped.
- Blazing Trail: Incarnate Devotion will summon two pillars of blue flame that will move to the sides. Two variants of this attack exist, one which starts from the center to the sides, and the other which starts from the sides. These pillars cover all the screen vertically, so they must be dodged or air dashed through, the variant that starts from the sides, must be dodged twice.
- Land Ablaze: Incarnate Devotion will summon four rocky platforms, while the floor is on a perpetual stream of blue flames. The Penitent One will take continuous damage while the floor is burning, so the rocky platforms are the only safe room.
- Blossoming Light: Incarnate Devotion will summon four flowers around the screen. These flowers will constantly spew three small projectiles angled towards the Penitent One. The projectiles can be destroyed. While the flowers are active, a barrier will shield the Incarnate Devotion's heart from any damage, so the flowers must be destroyed. If the player takes too long, the flowers will start regenerating in order of the flowers destroyed first. Only once all flowers are gone, will the shield disappear, following a brief time. This attack is only used while Land Ablaze is active.
Strategy[]
Incarnate Devotion is arguably less difficult than previous bosses such as Eviterno, but must not be underestimated. Incarnate Devotion has by far the highest damage output of any boss, and even when stacking resists on the Penitent One, it can deal close to 70 upwards of damage with each hit, guaranteeing players will be defeated within 5 hits or possibly less depending on their HP.
Incarnate Devotion's attacks will require evasiveness as parrying is fundamentally useless. Fortunately the attacks aren't difficult to avoid per se, and mostly require proper timing. Golden Explosion need only to be double jumped, but an air dash can follow as a safety precaution. Blazing Trial requires more concentration to avoid regardless of variant; if the Penitent One is in the offensive, they'll likely be close to the heart, so players will have to cut their combos short in order to avoid the center variant. The side variant needs players to avoid twice, as both pillars will each the opposite end of the screen, so players will have to dodge both. In both instances, the pillars move at moderate speed, so players should avoid dodging too early or will end up getting hit. Land Ablaze will require players to be aware of their movement so as to not fall to the floor beneath, as all other attacks are used normally during this time. Blossoming Light is the trickiest attack, as players will have to be fast on destroying the flowers while having to carefully navigate the barrage from the flowers. It is usually best to destroy the closest flower, then the remaining flower on the respective half of the screen, before tackling the other two.
For offense, the player is free to employ any measures they see fit, as the enemy is stationary. Ruego al Alba might work the best as its balanced nature, is ideal to allow the Penitent One room to pummel at the Incarnate Devotion while avoiding Blazing Trial timely, while Blood Pact can help regenerate HP lost through the Incarnate Devotion's high damage. Veredicto can prove useful due to its range and great damage, while its swing's arc could help against the Flowers. Sarmiento & Centella might be the most challenging weapon due to its short range, which will likely drag the player down when inflicting damage on either the Incarnate Devotion or the flowers. Seguiriya to the Memory of your Eyes could be useful for both it and Ruego al Alba (unwise for Veredicto due to it's Fervor consuption). Special care must be taken to not attack immediatelly after the flowers are destroyed as there is a brief lag before the barrier disappears.
Overall players should pay attention to dodge, and damage Incarnate Devotion when the opportunity arises. The battle is fortunately not too complex, and only demands that players evade timely. In due time Incarnate Devotion should fall.
